To the Bone: to be very deeply affected by something. This collaborative jewellery work honors the artists’ material practices and relationship to their respective materials. Referenced in the crossbones of this piece are the bone fleshing tools found within Blackburn’s Denesųłiné culture, and referenced as the skull is a silhouette of Badrin’s crocheted mask work made from fishing rope, a reflection of his Newfoundland upbringing. To the Bone centers the deep love found within their making practices and signifies the ancestral knowledge that survives mortality through their own interpretation of this universal symbol.
First edition
First Edition is a collaborative play on ‘Artist Proof’, a terms used to describe a copy of a limited-edition print reserved for the artist, and often more valuable. Through this inverted play on words, Omar Badrin and Catherine Blackburn have created a limited-edition reworked t-shirt collection that constructs identity to be forward facing and yet concealed.
Together they explore the constructs of craft, fine art, and wearable work, while simultaneously questioning the visibility of artists within the artworld. This series urges to honor the hands found in the handmade and critiques the value of the artist to the artworld.
